Thomas Jefferson High

What is Special About Our School?

All Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHS) students have access to rigorous classes and a nurturing learning environment.

We serve over 1800 students in grades 9-12. It is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges and a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools.

TJHS is marked by the International Baccalaureate Program (IB), which requires all students to challenge themselves at a high academic level. Rigorous course work prepares each student with the skills to acquire knowledge beyond high school. Students in 9th and 10th grade are enrolled in the Middle Years IB Program (MYP), which prepares them for the IB Diploma Program (DP). IB learning targets are aligned to state standards and all assessments are sent to external assessors, assuring that student work conforms to “world-class” standards.

Recent graduates have gained entrance to 4 and 2 year colleges, art schools and technical schools, as well as serving the military and entering the workforce.

The Construction Apprenticeship Preparation Program (CAPP) is an integrated 4-year program for students interested in careers and apprenticeships in the construction industry.  Construction, Language Arts, and Math instructors team to take students through the four-year curriculum. Free college credit is available to enrolled students.

Raider Advantage, an after-school tutoring program is available to all students two hours per day four days a week. Additional programs such as AVID, Gear-Up and PAL help to provide support and resources beyond the school day.

No Child Left Behind Report Card

The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s web site makes this information available on-line. Find your school’s report card on-line at http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/, Click on Federal Way in the “Summary” box, then choose your school from the list. Thomas Jefferson High School International Baccalaureate Program

The IB program is a two-year pre-university course of study designed to meet the needs of highly motivated students and to promote international understanding.

The effectiveness of the IB program is due not only to the depth of the individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the program. Unlike other elective honors programs, the IB requires each student to take courses in six academic areas. In order to qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, students must take written examinations in six subject areas. In addition, the students must participate in a creative project and community service activity.

Students earning the IB Diploma are awarded advanced standing at prestigious universities around the world. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for admissions or course credit.
