What is Special About Our School?
The mission of the Puget Sound Business & Industry Academy is to create a powerful educational experience that provides students with innovative skills and opportunities to meet the demands of the modern business world and our local community.
The academy’s curriculum includes commerce-related courses such as Business Law and accounting; communications subjects such as Journalism, Commercial Art, Design, and Photography; and IT opportunities including Digital Information Processing, Web Design, and a Microsoft Office Specialist class preparatory to the MOS certification test. Throughout the curriculum, students can acquire the academic, technical, and interpersonal skills they need to succeed in business and that will serve them well in any career.
Academic standards are high in this academy’s standards-based curriculum. Teachers are highly qualified, motivated, and dedicated to student achievement. They use a variety of instructional strategies to address the diverse learning needs of the students.
One of this academy’s unique advantages is the opportunity to apply basic skills to real-world problems while acquiring the specialized knowledge of the world of business and industry. Students can receive credit for work in the community through Co-op Work Experience and internships and practice their management skills by running the student store. All complete the same core requirements as those in other Todd Beamer academies.
The Business & Industry Academy is establishing partnerships with the larger Puget Sound community that will bring a powerful new element to our students’ experience and create valuable connections to the world outside of school. It is setting new standards in innovative approaches to integrating awareness of business and industry into the high school experience.Academic and Student Programs

No Child Left Behind Report Card
The No Child Left Behind Act requires all schools and school districts in the United States to prepare annual reports for parents and the public detailing their academic achievement. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s web site makes this information available on-line at http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/ Click on Federal Way in the “Summary” box, then choose your school from the list. You may also request a paper copy of the report card at your school’s office. For more information about the NCLB Act, go to http://www.nclb.gov/index.html.
High School Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2011
Because student learning is the critical product of education, the Federal Way Public Schools Board of Education has established grade level expectations for students to receive a high school diploma. With the Class of 2000 and beyond, TBHS students shall achieve 31 high school graduation credits to be eligible to receive a high school diploma. The equivalent of 32 class periods of 90 minutes each equals 1.0 credit toward graduation.
To qualify for high school graduation in Federal Way Public Schools, students must receive at least a “C-“ grade in each of the required courses. In addition to earning 31 credits, students must also pass all sections of the WASL/HSPE, create a culminating portfolio and develop a 13th year post high school plan. For information on specific course requirements, see the following web site: http://www.fwps.org/info/policies/2000/2410.htm
High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE)
Beginning in the spring of 2010, the State of Washington requires the HSPE be given tenth and eleventh grade. The HSPE replaces the WASL.
