Information for Wildwood Elementary Parents

Dear Wildwood Parent/Guardian,

I am writing to let you know that your child is eligible to either attend another school in the Federal Way school district or to receive after-school tutoring through a program known as a supplementary education system (SES). You are being offered these choices because Wildwood Elementary is a Title I school, and has not made adequate yearly progress (AYP) in at least one category for two years in a row.

These choices are being offered under the requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2002. This federal law requires schools to make a certain level of improvement in their test scores each year. Wildwood Elementary did not meet its improvement goals in two reading categories on the state’s standardized tests in 2009 and 2010. While we do not yet have our 2011 test score results, Wildwood will remain in improvement until its students’ test scores meet the state requirements for two years in a row.

Until that time, the school is required to offer parents two options, public school choice and SES.

If you choose to have your child attend another school, the district will provide transportation to one of two other schools in the district that are meeting AYP. Those schools are: Adelaide and Meredith Hill Elementary.

You can learn more about public school choice at Wildwood on Thursday, September 15th from 6 - 7:30 p.m.

If you choose to keep your child at Wildwood, and want to have your child participate in the SES, you are encouraged to attend a “vendor fair” on Saturday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You will be able to meet a variety of SES providers and make a selection that best fits your student’s needs. Your family must qualify for free and reduced lunch in order to participate in the SES.

We want you to know that the staff at Wildwood Elementary is committed to the success of its students and the school. Through hard work and targeted instruction, our school’s students have shown progress on the state tests. Federal Way Public Schools supports the growth of all schools in the district through a variety of strategies including aligning curriculum from Kindergarten through grade 12; professional development and coaching for our staff; and enhanced family and community partnerships.  If you’d like more information about our efforts to meet state and federal achievement requirements, please go to http://www.fwps.org/info/overview/performance/.

Sincerely,

Michael Swartz, Principal
