Federal Way Public Schools' Communications Department, led by Chief Communications Officer Diane Turner, second from left above, received an award of merit and an award of excellence from the Washington State School Public Relations Association for communications materials produced in 2011.
The Progress Report to the Community fall 2011 issue received an award of excellence, the highest award presented by the association. The issue, which was mailed to all households in the district's service area, focused on the district's transition to standards-based education, written from the perspective of teachers involved in the work leading up to the transition.
The Parents' Guide to Standards-Based Education, along with related power standards sheets, won an Award of Merit, the second-highest award presented by the group. This award was shared between the Communications staff and a team of translators who worked to explain standards-based education in plain language to parents in the four major languages spoken by students that the district serves: English, Spanish, Russian/Ukranian, and Korean.
