Grading
In Standards-Based Education, “making the grade” is like preparing for a driver’s license test.
The goal is clear: You want to drive a car. The steps to get there are understood: You get your instruction permit, take a state-approved driver’s education course, put in hours of supervised driving practice, and get feedback along the way.
The measure of mastery is also clear: Passing the driver’s test. When the prospective driver has put in the practice and feels ready, it’s time for the test. Some people need more than one chance to take this important test—and they still earn a license to drive.
Standards-Based Education gives students the practice they need and more than one opportunity to demonstrate success—if they need it. And each student’s work is measured against the standard, not other students.
The district’s move to SBE gives students a license to learn at their own pace. And passing tests will represent true mastery of learning goals.
